The film focuses on the Chinese version of Buddhism and its development throughout the ages. Among many other locations, it features sequences shot in 17-century old Lingyin Si – Temple of the Soul’s Retreat – and other historical shrines previously unavailable to foreign filmmakers. The documentary contains interviews with buddhist masters, discovers life paths of the monks and explains the nature of Chinese Zen. Complementing the cultural and historical background, the film also shows the first-ever recorded rites in Lingyin Si and Shangtianzhu Faxi, as well as many captivating shots of the surrounding nature.
